They are trying to harm us. Everybody has heard stories about identity theft, file loss, and spending endless hours cleaning up a PC mess caused by malware (whether it be a virus, worm, a little amount of spyware, or a rootkit incursion). Microsoft operating systems have been criticized for "allowing" such unpleasant things to happen on computers running the Windows operating system. The mechanisms by which these "nasties" are distributed need to be corrected, and we see reports of updates, patches, releases, upgrades, or whatever the modifications are called. Some people don't use computers, thus they are secure from issues. For the rest of us, every time we switch on a computer, we encounter issues.

THE RESCUE OF MICROSOFT Put the second Tuesday of every month on you calendar. Microsoft typically makes public any essential patches it deems necessary on that day. Naturally, Microsoft occasionally distributes patches on other days, especially if the issue that needs to be corrected is thought to be serious enough.

NOW WHAT? IT'S AVAILABLE. In essence, you want to install the patches on your computer. You may remark, "Not so fast," especially if you are in charge of other PCs. You'll want some reassurance that the fixes meant to safeguard your computer won't break any programs. Before releasing the updates to the public, you might want to install them on a test computer. But for the majority of you, the extra danger you put your computer while you wait to finish the tests is not worth the time it takes to execute them. Installing the fixes will give you additional protection against possible shutdowns, complete malfunctions, and probable loss.

SIMPLE IS GOOD – You may select which Microsoft important patches to have downloaded and installed automatically at a specific time and day of the week by going to Tools/Windows Update in Internet Explorer. You can also decide to check at a specific time each day. You can pick Tuesday (or Wednesday if you chose Tuesday but weren't sure what time of day the patches could be available).
